Sick and Tired

Greetings from a sick Mama.  The girls all caught a cold over the weekend, and said cold has now smacked me in the face, full force.  Haven't been this sick in a while.

It makes sense-- we have been running pretty ragged for a few weeks.  There have been many days when we have been just going and going from one thing to the next from 9 AM to 7 PM, and even a couple of days where we have had multiple things going on and were forced to decide between them.  Everything seems equally important and that makes it hard.

I think those of you that have kept up with this blog for long enough know that I tend to be wayyyyy too much of a "yes" girl.  We started out this school year with each child doing one thing in addition to homeschool (well, J was doing zero) and slowly and gradually opportunities have come up that I felt were great ones that we couldn't refuse, and here we are in spring, officially over-committed.  So I go through this cycle where I pare us down to minimal activities, and it feels great, but then I think "oh, we can handle one more thing" and "such and such would be so great to do" and then we get over-scheduled again.

It's not so much that the kids are over-scheduled... I think they are handling things just fine... it's ME that is finding less and less energy for all of the driving, feeling weary of getting everyone in and out of the car, and having trouble with all of the remembering.  Yes, it's mostly the remembering.  The mental strain of, "Oh, did we get that teacher a gift?" or, "Must remember to bring snack today" or, "Gotta remember to pick up extra sunscreen before nature school" etc. etc.  I know this is the eternal, unavoidable plight of the mother... but still, the more activities you do, the more remembering there will be.

And so, yes.  I'm sick.  And tired.

I won't make any public pledges here on the blog but I'm hoping I have finally learned my lesson that less is always, always more.  At least that's the way it tends to work for this Mama.

So today I used the excuse of the girls having colds (although they were probably all healthy enough to go to their things) and called in sick to L's nature school and C's preschool.  I simply didn't feel like driving them!  So there!  I sent an email to request that I FaceTime my rehearsal tonight for an upcoming concert, and my director happily agreed to let me keep my germs at home.  I think we are going to try to get L to gymnastics since she has a meet coming up this weekend, but M can handle that when he gets home.  The laundry is going to remain unfolded another day, and the dishes are going to remain in the sink.  So the only thing left is for me to sit here in bed while the baby naps and the big girls watch Diary of a Wimpy Kid, sip some Throat Coat, do a little mouth breathing, and catch up with you, my lovely friends!

So.  Let's do a catch-up in pictures, shall we?

We have been LOVING the spring weather.

We tried to take some pics next to the Red Sox sign at the playground, since it was opening day that day, but methinks the sun was a bit too bright. Hah.

We have also been enjoying digging out spring outfits, and the beauty of our own backyard and nearby apple orchard.

A fabulous view on an early morning run recently-- the sun was rising on my left and the moon was setting on my right, over the apple trees.  So peaceful.

Apple blossoms are beginning on our trees in our yard.  Looks like we might be in for another bumper crop this year.

My two new love affairs-- massaged kale, and Wild Planet tuna.  YUM.

Pinewood Derby!  It happened on one of those days where we had, like, 8 other things going on, but I'm so glad that we got to do this.  N's and L's cars actually did remarkably well, considering we spent very little time and effort building them.  These gals were excited to watch their own cars take first and second place in several heats, but more importantly they were kind and gracious and cheered on all of their friends.

We had a fun afternoon seeing James and the Giant Peach with Auntie Bethie and Uncle Adam, and then the next morning I found a picture of the Empire State Building with a giant peach on top, stuck to the Kix box.

Speaking of pictures, I got this awesome one from C the other day.  She said, "It's Xenophilius Lovegood, in his house on fire, surrounded by deatheaters."  LOL?  Perhaps Harry Potter 7 is a bit dark for a 5-year-old, but it's pretty hard to keep her from it with the older girls being such huge fans.

Lastly, my fave pics from Easter Sunday... out for brunch with Grandma and Grandpa.

I have a couple more to share but the baby's awake!  Hopefully I'll be back soon-- we may take another sick day tomorrow, so you might hear from me again.  Happy spring to all!
