A burst of creative energy
Good morning!
How was your weekend? We had a somewhat busy one but lots of fun activities-- N's last soccer game and pizza party with her teammates, Scouting for Food, and our regular church activities. Sunday afternoon was quite restful as M allowed me a long run outside while he stayed home and worked on laundry and tidying the house with the girls. What an amazing man. I know I always say it, but he really is the greatest. I'm so very lucky.
Most of the vibrant colors have dropped off the trees around here but I'm still enjoying the dull mustardy-yellows and burnt oranges and browns of late fall. It makes me think of Thanksgiving. Here's a shot from my run yesterday...
I know I promised to write down some recipes from our freezer cook and link back, but instead I'm using my precious free time here to chronicle some of the amazing artwork that's been going on in our house this week. Recipes forthcoming, I promise ;)
We have had a plethora of opportunities to decorate pumpkins this fall-- we picked some of our own at the local orchard, which the girls just decorated on their own with Sharpies for our doorstep. Then our local YMCA branch celebrated their 1-year anniversary and there was pumpkin painting there. The next day while I had my workout the girls painted a few of the extra ones in the child care room. And finally, C's preschool gave us a few to decorate for displaying in the classroom.
My absolute favorite was the Garfield and Odie pumpkins, made completely by N and L with little help (N made Odie and L made Garfield). We watched the 1987 Garfield Halloween special the other night as a movie night (I admit that I was re-living my own childhood on that-- but the girls loved it too!) and they were inspired.
Last week we checked The Apple Doll out of the library and N devoured it. She kept asking to make an apple doll and so last weekend we began the process. It took two days to dry in the oven on the lowest temperature which was actually well-timed with a cold snap that came through our parts this week. Our house was warmed and smelled delicious and apple-y for a few days. N helped C make one too and the finished products came out so cute!
She is so very proud that she made this herself and is taking it everywhere to show everyone.
L came up with a plan for making origami coin purses, and so that has been her latest project-- making a coin purse for everyone in the house and all of her friends. She set up a booth to sell her coin purses on our porch for a while, too. So far I've gotten two coin purses in my favorite color. So sweet. :)
N and L were hard at work making a flannel board like their Sunday School one when I arrived home from dropping off C at preschool the other day. It looked exactly like the one at church! They followed this up by doing a pretend Church School class on Noah's ark for their stuffed animals.
Lastly, we have been studying the presidential election in homeschool this week and the girls made the cutest little craftivity after we watched a few of the Schoolhouse Rock clips on American Government: Electoral College and No More Kings. I think they came out really well!
I should say that all this project-ing is pretty typical in our house. Our girls have no shortage of creative ideas for the next best thing to make or create. Sometimes it is to my chagrin because of all the messes that get made but mostly I can look on the bright side and appreciate their endless industry! So this is just a sample to record for posterity :)

That slanted afternoon light, right? It means winter is coming, but I sort of don't mind. Very peaceful. Can you tell I enjoyed my hour of quiet? :)
