What Miss J is doing
Well, sorry... I looked back and realized that I spent the last two blog posts complaining about how tired I was. It does tend to consume your thoughts when you aren't getting good sleep, but I didn't mean to throw little Miss J under the bus, especially when she's doing so many cute things lately that I haven't mentioned.
So let's mention some of those things shall we?
What a little personality is starting to come out! We are hearing first words from her, which include Mama and Dada, of course, as well as "ball", "night-night", and "What's that?" which she says with a finger pointed at the object in question. It usually comes out like, "Sstthhhaaaaa?"
She also likes to make animal sounds... or maybe she just likes to listen to Mommy make them :)
She is extremely happy and laughs at just about anything-- especially if sisters are giggling along with her. She LOVES playing peek-a-boo with them and it never fails to send her into a fit of giggles.
In fact, sometimes I find her crawling around the house, playing peek-a-boo with herself, muttering "Boo. Haha. Boo. Haha."
She is so into reading books lately... again and again and again and again. As soon as we close a book and say "The End!" she grabs it, flips it back to the front cover, and hands it back to whoever is reading to her, sometimes along with a sign for "more".
Oh, and she has learned a few baby signs, mostly the ones involving food-- "more", "milk" and "all done". I'm sure she would pick up more if I took the time to teach her but I actually don't know many more signs beyond that. :/ I will have to do some homework in all my spare time!!
Speaking of food, we did a sort of modified version of baby led weaning with her-- I did give her some purees because around 7-8 months she actually showed more interest in eating from a spoon than in feeding herself (exactly the opposite of what all the books on BLW told me). I would put little bits of food in front of her and she would just stare at them. But she ate pretty eagerly when I offered her a spoon. That was short-lived, though, and she started enthusiastically feeding herself around 8.5/9 months, which made things much easier because I could just feed her whatever we were eating and didn't have to prepare something different. Her current favorite foods are blueberries and strawberries, apples, any kind of meat, sweet potato fries (even the spicy ones!) and Corn Chex. :)
We are nursing about twice a day usually-- in the past week or two she shows much more interest in table food than in nursing. Her typical schedule is to nurse when she wakes up, eat breakfast with us, then nurse again before her morning nap. She eats lunch with us, has a formula bottle (we often skip this bottle if she's had a big lunch or snack) before afternoon nap, eats supper with us, and then has a formula bottle before bed. We use soy formula because we have seen a definite connection between her eczema and consuming dairy products-- if I have some ice cream or milk in my coffee I notice a flare up on her the next day, even though we're nursing very little. The few times she has had mac n cheese or a milk-based soup she breaks out almost immediately. So I'm not quite sure how we will handle the transition from formula to milk-- by this age I was transitioning my other girls to cow's milk... need to ask the doctor about that one.
She started crawling in earnest about three weeks ago. We actually had Early Intervention come and do an evaluation because the pediatrician suggested it when she wasn't really showing any signs of mobility at her 9-month checkup. She didn't qualify for services since her numbers were too high (her fine motor skills upped the number on her gross motor skills so overall she scored above the qualifying number). But they're still going to come for the next few months and help her out until she starts walking. She started pulling up to stand this week, so I think she's not far off!
This is a blurry pic but I can never get her to look at me long enough to take a pic! Busy girl! She is definitely getting more and more active every day and as I enter the chasing phase I'm remembering how exhausting it can be. Hopefully sleep will continue to improve so that I can keep up with her :)
Here's another thing that has been fascinating lately: opening and shutting things.
In fact, that's another word she picked up this week: "Sweeee!"
She is not the greatest napper-- more often than not she is only napping once a day (skipping the afternoon nap, usually). Lots of times she will only nap an hour (sometimes less!) and then won't sleep for the rest of the day. This makes for some fussy evenings, so I'm trying to push her a little later before I put her down in the morning, which has gradually been getting easier as she gets up a little later (with the 4:30 AM wake-ups she was ready for a nap by 8:30 at the latest!). I look back on day-in-the-life posts from when C was a baby and long for those 4-hour nap days... not happening with this babe. I mean, there's usually so much noise and activity in our house, who would sleep when there's such excitement to be had? With our activities schedule all over the map it's pretty hard to enforce a quiet time during the day, but I'd love to get back to it. We shall see how it all shakes out this year.
She is so great and growing up really fast. I'm sad to see most of her baby days behind us (I have been meaning for a long while to write a post reflecting on being done having kids) but excited to see what kind of a little person she will become! Watching language develop is always so fun, and with her already ham-ish sense of humor
I'm sure she will continue to delight us all in the years to come!
