A trip to Boston, and meal plan!

Welcome to this year's annual blog post from Ab!!!

JK, of course.  More like monthly.  But I'm still blogging less than I'd like to be.  Time this year is slipping through my fingers in a new way, and I feel like all my girls suddenly became a year older while I looked away for only a second.  I could write a lot on that subject and who knows if I will ever actually get the time to sit down and do it, but it's on my mind.

Summer has been very good to us, and there have been lots of fun events and milestones that have gone un-blogged in the past three months!  Hopefully I will get a chance to record them all as life is going to calm down a bit for us in the next six weeks or so.  But I have found that when there is a vacuum in our lives, things tend to race in to fill the void very quickly, unless I am very firm and purposeful about saying no to those things.  I think I'm feeling ready to do more saying no.

It has been a very hot July for us; how about you?  I was telling M last night that I constantly feel like I just got home from an afternoon at marching band rehearsal in Texas, just like my high school days.  A nightly cold shower is necessary.  Sunday M and I sang in a concert at a local church-- it was wonderful, and beautiful, and also very hot.  With no air conditioning in the building and the temperature hovering near 90 outside, there was hardly a breath of air.  After the concert I came home for a quick bite to eat with the family and then hurried back to my regular Sunday evening singing job in a different church, also with no AC, where it was even warmer, if you can imagine that.

Sunday evening N and C hitched a ride to CT for a few days with Grandma and Grandpa, who had come up to our neighborhood to attend the Sunday afternoon concert.  So Monday morning found just me, L and J deciding what we would do with our day.  L and I were excited to have some special time together and I started listing all the things we might do-- hiking, beach, a train trip to Boston... she stopped me right there and said, "Train trip to Boston.  Today.  That's my choice."

I warned her that it would be very hot-- temperatures were forecasted in the mid-90s-- and that perhaps we should save it for another day.  She didn't want to wait.  So we started talking about all of the things we might do in Boston, and she settled on the Boston Tea Party museum.  Since that one is partially indoors and partially outdoors, I knew we would at least have a place to head into air conditioning if we needed to beat the heat.

And so we packed a lunch, boarded the train and went!

On the way to Boston L confessed to being nervous about the subway-- she didn't want the doors to close before she went through, she said.  We discussed what she should do if she ever got separated from me (talk to the subway driver or a transit policeman) and we went over my cell phone number again which she has memorized.  But she was still looking wide-eyed the entire time we were on the T (we had to change lines twice, so there was a lot of on and off, up and down elevators, etc.).  She was very responsible listening for our stop and holding on to the stroller as we navigated the crowds on the trains and platforms.  She seems much older than her six years sometimes; I wonder if most kids are so concerned about such things.

We finally arrived at the museum after a short walk from South Station, and we thoroughly enjoyed our interactive experience!

Dressed as Indians and ready to revolt! (Mama was glistening in the heat just a bit!)

Touring the "Eleanor" (replica of the ship where the Tea Party took place)

Throwing the tea overboard!  (L had been waiting for this moment all day)

Sharing snacks on the train ride home-- we just beat the rain!

J was the best baby ever-- she was completely quiet throughout the entire hour and fifteen minutes of the interactive tour.  She only cried a little bit at the very end of the movie at the end of the tour-- there were lots of loud sounds of guns and cannons and, having been awake most of the day, sweaty, and very hungry at that point, she was in no mood to be scared by loud noises.  But then after a feeding she was back to her happy self, smiling and waving to everyone on the train, excited as always to be on an adventure with her family.

Such a great memory of a day!
