7 Quick Takes Friday: Garden, Fun Vids, and a new toy for Mama

So if you were very observant of the pictures in my weekending post, you would have noticed that we gave C her first "big girl" haircut last week (meant to blog about it at the time but that didn't happen as per usual).
Before

The morning after the cut (same pjs, same chair... different haircut)

And a few days later when it had settled down a bit (with a bit of green smoothie mustache)
Usually I'm a bit sentimental about kid haircuts, but this time I was surprisingly un-emotional and completely willing to give C the chop myself.  I think it was all of the constant food and stickiness in the hair, and the constant bedraggled look due to C's insistence that no hairbrush or ponytail holder should come within three feet of her.  I just wasn't sad about it because I knew she would look super cute with the new 'do.  And I was right, don't you think?

Unfortunately, it seems head lice has struck again.  Some eggs must have been hiding in that jungle of hair on N's head because... they're baaaaaaaaack!! Their numbers are quite diminished this time, so that's good news. But I think we're going to have to be even more vigilant for a longer period of time this go around if we want to be completely rid of them.

Part of my increased vigilance is going to involve furious vacuuming, as often as I can possibly manage it. I commented to M yesterday as I was about to give the house another going over that it sure would be nice to have a vacuum that didn't spew out more than it sucked up. I mean if we're really serious about getting rid of bugs, shouldn't we be maximizing our vacuuming efforts with the most effective tool?

M agreed.  We have never once in our nearly 10 years of marriage paid a single penny for a vacuum cleaner (we have always had free hand-me-downs). So we decided a splurge was in order. We did some quick internet research and then I headed out to Best Buy last night to purchase...

The Dyson DC40.

Ohhhh man... I think I'm in love. This thing is AMAZING. My floors have not been this clean in years. I've been vacuuming nooks and crannies and baseboards and under furniture just because... well, it's fun!! If you're having trouble feeling motivated to clean your house, I recommend dropping a large chunk of change on one of these babies.  SO worth it.

That's right. Head Lice have driven me to abandon my usual tightwad sensibilities. Can you believe it? However, I do think it says something that my most scandalous indulgence of late was a vacuum cleaner. Such is the thrilling life I lead.

L's last day of school was a week ago yesterday. M took the morning off from work and we all attended her final "show" and ice cream social.

L's beloved teacher
Most of the other girls in L's class were dressed to the nines, and I tried to suggest a fancy dress to her before we left, but she insisted on wearing her Star Wars shirt.  That's who she is, right?  You pick your battles.
(Family, I have videos of L's songs and recognition uploaded, so email me if you want me to share with you on Google+.)

It was a wonderful morning and we were so proud of little L.  She was beyond thrilled to have us all there to share the morning with her.  It was a really great day.

We were sad to see the end of a wonderful first year of school for L.  The time has really flown since her first day!  At the same time, it's nice to feel a bit more breathing room in our weekly schedule. She's only been out of school a week, but combined with the end of my teaching year, I can already feel that we are relaxing our way towards total summer freedom.  Of course it's nice having her home more too!

Our garden is planted!!!

Some of our seedlings survived, and we've had a bit of new growth this week.  We've also had plenty of rain but very few really warm days, so nothing is growing like weeds just yet.

But hopefully soon we should have broccoli, kale, cauliflower, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers and strawberries.  Yeeeaaaahhh... we got a little over-zealous.  I read somewhere that one square meter of garden will produce more than a single person could eat in a year, so... well... I think if everything survives and produces we'll have a massive abundance on our hands.  But let's not count those chickens before they hatch.

Plus I got the e-book version of the Thy Hand Hath Provided cookbook on my Kindle for iPhone (back when she was doing a giveaway and selling it for $.99! score!) which has tons of canning and preserving recipes.  So.  If I can only find the time for all of that, we should be all set.  Perhaps a canning and preserving party later this summer?  Helpful friends get a jar of pickles for their trouble? Anyone??  ;-}

C is really turning into her own little person and is coming up with plenty of "zingers" these days as my husband calls them.  I'll write a few of them down, and they probably won't be funny to you at all since you can't hear her cute little voice saying them, but I want to remember them anyway so here goes.

The other morning we were eating breakfast and she found a piece of last night's dinner in some cranny of her booster seat (we had had lentil burgers).  She said to me, "What's dis, a piece of bewgew?" (Translation: What's this, a piece of burger?)  She then stuck the burger crumb down her straw and said "WEEEEE I'm going downa swide!" and watched the burger chunk gleefully as it slid down the straw into her drink.

I was reading to her this morning as she sat on the potty.  We were looking at a book called Senses at the Seashore that had photographs of real children in it.  She pointed to a photograph of a young girl and said, "Dat one's Sawah, when she was a wittle giwl. Sawah is just... da best."  Then, pointing to two other little boys, "...and dat one is Patwick, and dat one is Cowdy."

????  Where did she get all that?  I have no idea.

But it's adorable.

P.S. We're going great guns with potty training now that I'm actually giving it some time and effort.  More on that soon, I hope.

The other day, we said, "It's time for bed!" and the girls did this:

Don't ask, because I don't even know.

M has been on vacation this week, and as per usual (this year anyway) we didn't seem to accomplish much of our to-do list.  It took us a while to get rested up after the weekend away, I think, and head lice also took up a lot of time.  It did seem, however, that both M and I just felt like hanging out together and playing, crafting, riding bikes etc. with the girls, rather than being super productive.  The to-do list can wait, right?  Sometimes it's enough work just to get through the day.

M took this amazing video which pretty much sums up our week:
