Weekend Post Number... 3??
I've been having fun chronicling our weekends here for the past few weeks. I think there have been two or three weekend posts of late? Anyway, it has been so nice having a bit more freedom in our schedule since I've given up a few weekend and Monday jobs; I just have to share the joy here!
Our weekend sort of started on Friday since N came home with an itchy rash on her cheeks, arms and shoulders Thursday afternoon and was complaining of an earache. So I kept her home from school Friday and we took her to the doctor. Yep-- another ear infection, and fifths disease (which sounds very scary, but is in fact a very common, albeit annoying, childhood illness).
Man, I tell ya. Kindergarten. Germ cesspool. It has been quite the winter for illness anyway, but N has probably been hit the hardest. Those long days of school just wear her out and she can't bounce back from things. She seems to be missing more school than she is attending. Is she the only one? Should we be doing something different here? I have to confess that the thought of homeschooling frequently comes back to my mind these days... but I digress.
So we got N a prescription for her ear, and then brought Her Itchiness home to an oatmeal bath. Other than the occasional mad scratching, she bore up well and the girls had a lot of fun playing together that day. Part of the fun was that, upon arriving home from the doctor, we found this month's Kiwi Crate on our front step:
L built an awesome skyscraper. I love her little people in the windows.
The younger two had quiet time while I spent the afternoon working on my laptop in bed with a feverish little bundle snoring next to me.
We ordered pizza Friday night. And I paid the extra $5 for delivery. Big splurge. But it was awesome only having to open my front door to get dinner, and then put five plates in the dishwasher afterwards. I mean, isn't that worth a million bucks on occasion?
Saturday was more staying home, with the girls playing quietly together. M was feeling under the weather too. I took C with me for a trip to BJ's since she was the only one who felt like going out. During afternoon nap time I celebrated the one-year anniversary of my half marathon by running 12.5 miles. (I had hoped to do 13.1 but after a winter of not much running, my body gave up after about mile 9. I pushed it about 3 more after that and, well... that was all she wrote.)
Leftovers for dinner Saturday night and then early to bed for everyone.
Sunday everyone was feeling loads better, but knowing we were probably still contagious, we didn't feel we should go to church and spread germs to the kids in the nursery. The other two girls were red-cheeked, coughing, and feverish on occasion, although neither of them ever got as sick as N did, and still haven't.
So instead of church we took a trip to Ocean State Job Lot to look at deeply discounted gardening supplies. Yes, that's right, we plan to attempt a garden this year. I'm sort of terrified, since I've killed every single thing that I have ever attempted, and I'm really great at forgetting to water things. But hopefully with my husband's help-- and the girls too; they're so excited!-- we will not fail.
Anyway, we quickly picked up some seeds and planting trays and soil. Then we came home and spent the afternoon in a planting party!
C woke up from her nap, and they all watched a bit of Sunday afternoon golf with Daddy while I made
It's no fun for any of the girls being sick, or for their worried Mama, but the taking-it-slow for a few days is never bad, especially when we are so fantastically blessed to have girls who get along so well, and enjoy begin together so much.
And that was our weekend... how was yours?

The older girls filled all the seed trays with dirt and planted and labeled the seeds themselves with minimal help. We're using a little spray bottle that makes watering easy and fun for them.
(N sounded out the words and made all the labels for the vegetables herself without asking for help with the spelling!)
The plan is to keep the seeds on our sunny porch during the day when it's warm enough, and then bring them in at night as long as it's too cold. We'll see how things go!
We also got a compost bin, something I've been wanting to do forever to cut back on our trash, and we finally did it. We're keeping it out on the porch but we've talked with the girls about how we'll have to bring it inside and/or empty it frequently in the yard to prevent pests. Here was my favorite conversation from the weekend:
N: I wouldn't want to wake up and find a dead animal on our porch.
M: ...or a live one!
L: ...or a turtle!
The girls bathed off their dirty hands and feet and then did some "chores" for Mama-- cleaned up the toys on the living room, their bedroom, and the porch.
Broccoli soup for supper-- made with bone broth (thanks for the idea for that Jen! it is delicious and nutritious and we'll be using it more often!)
The girls all wolfed it down... a handful of oyster crackers help the healthy soup go down, did you know? ;-} It doesn't happen every day, but it does a Mama's heart good to see her kids eating a healthy meal, especially when they're sick.
The girls watched Monsters Inc. after supper with bowls of popcorn. Then it was off to bed.
After the kids were down, M and I snuggled on the couch and watched the latest episode of Cosmos, a mind-blowing show. Kind of a magical end to a great weekend!
