N's 5-year Checkup
N's 5-year checkup happened back in August... yeah... three months ago. Been a little busy.
But it still has to get recorded here on the blog!
She was her sweet agreeable self for the whole visit, and even though I could tell there were a few things she secretly did NOT want to do (like having her eyes checked), she was compliant anyway.
(Lately her little self-conscious streak is really coming out-- she hates being the center of attention or feeling like she is being laughed at. So having to read the letters off the eye chart, even though she could do it flawlessly, felt uncomfortable to her because she was put on the spot.)
But she was excited and friendly with the doctor, and asked to take the "teddy bear dress" (paper gown they gave her to wear for privacy) home.

Favorite Toys:
N isn't much interested in toys at this phase of life. She'll play with them, but she's more interested in things that involve interacting with other people-- dress up, tea parties, puzzles with a sister or parent. She has recently learned Go Fish and Crazy 8's and loves to play with Daddy... she's a whiz! And of course, there's the constant drawing, crafting, and artistic pursuits that she loves. We inherited an antique roll top desk from my parents, and we have all her supplies organized in there for her-- she spends hours down there just creating.
Favorite Books:
When I asked her what her favorite book was, N replied "Gus the Dinosaur Bus".
(I actually don't know what her favorites are right now, as Daddy does 100% of the before-bed story reading, and that's pretty much the only reading time we have with our school girl right now. :( She's still a big fan of spooky stories, I Spy books, and adventures/fantasy like kings & queens, pirates, fairy tales etc.)
Favorite Songs:
Our library is collecting the Disney Song and Story CDs and she loves them, especially the story being told with the movie soundtrack in the background.
Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine by the Beatles (been listening to a little Revolver lately)
Ballet music (The Nutcracker, Swan Lake)
Robot Rock by Daft Punk (requested by N when she and Daddy do their "jumping jacks" workout in the playroom)
And that's our N in a nutshell lately!
L's preschool teacher mentioned something to me that I hadn't even thought of-- she said there is an increasing trend of parents who are doing an extra year of preschool so that their kids are nearly 6 when they start kindergarten. That really makes a lot of sense to me when you're going in to a full day program. Different birthdays don't make the cutoff, obviously, but I'm realizing now that many of N's classmates are six months to a year older than she is. She seems to be holding up just fine now, but it was a little stressful for her at first and I wonder now if this is something we should have considered. Well... live and learn!

By way of a kindergarten update, she seems to have gotten through the transition and is now a bit less stressed and exhausted by the whole thing. It took about six weeks before she showed signs of getting used to things. My main barometer was her violin lessons-- when school started we had a period of almost two months where she would just about fall apart when I asked her to try anything new, and we played nothing but review songs. But lately she has shown renewed energy and is going great guns on a brand new piece.
We have been nothing but impressed with her school and teachers and the way everything is handled so far. Communication is pretty open too, so although I don't have a lot of time to be involved, I always feel like I can talk to her teachers, and conferences are coming up soon too. There have been a few social anxieties-- mostly N worries about activities or people that are new or unfamiliar. But she's very verbal with me and M about these things and usually we can work things out when she's upset.
