C's 12-month Checkup

C had her 12-month appointment today!

She was a bit cranky.  She's been cranky all week, working on a gigantic 1-year molar that is just about popped through but not quite.  Teething pain combined with her increasing stranger anxiety made her nervous from the moment we walked in the door... and then, Mommy subjected her to an exam in a chilly office with no clothes on, two shots and a lead test.  Mean Mommy.

(At least our new pediatrician does a finger stick for the lead test, rather than drawing blood from the arm like they did in our old office.  A slight improvement, but still no fun.)

Here are the stats:

Weight: 17 lbs, 6 ounces, 10th percentile
Height: 27.5 inches, 30th percentile
(apparently she shrank from the last visit?  or they measured wrong)
Head Circumference: 18 inches, 75th percentile

The doc was slightly concerned about her lack of growth.  She hasn't gained any height at all, and she hasn't quite gained a full pound of weight.  (Of course, her head is huge as is always the case with my kids.)

As I've mentioned before, she has been my most picky eater so far when it comes to solid foods.  The doc was telling me that she doesn't get much nutrition from breast milk at this age, and furthermore, she may even be filling up on breast milk and that's the reason why she's not eating much of her other foods.

Hmmmm... breast milk provides no nutrition for her?  That's not quite consistent with some things I've been reading.

I'm not saying that I want to nurse her indefinitely, and I'm perfectly willing to cut back, but I do want her to get the proper nutrition.  Yikes!  Who do I believe?

Well, that's another post for another day.  I'll move on to her favorites:

Favorite Foods:
Grilled Cheese
Applesauce
Crackers
Pasta (mac n' cheese especially!)
Pizza
Vanilla Yogurt

Favorite Movies/TV Shows/Characters:
She has shown absolutely no interest in TV.  Whenever we have it on for the older girls, she makes a beeline for Mommy or Daddy and wants to be held.  I think she has figured out that this is a time that she can have my undivided attention!

Favorite Books:
The Snappy Sounds books
Soft books, like Good Puppy

Favorite Songs:
Wheels on the Bus
If You're Happy and you Know It
Open Shut Them
Happy Birthday

Favorite Activities:
*Ball.  Playing, throwing, rolling, anything to do with a ball is cloud 9 for C.
*Playing Peek-a-boo, usually behind the curtains.  She'll crawl over to a window and go to town.
*Giving kisses (Mommy loves these!!)
*Standing at our dining room window and watching the birdies outside (we must get a feeder soon!)
*Taking things out of containers and putting them back in.  She especially loves it when I give her something inside a ziplock bag.  She will spend twenty minutes trying to get that thing out.
*Making big messes:

(In her defense, this is "her" cabinet that I actually encourage her to play in, because it keeps her busy but also close-by while I'm working in the kitchen cooking or doing dishes.  I keep it stocked with things that are interesting and safe for her to play with.)

Words So Far:
Yeah (used universally and can mean a lot of things... anything from "yes" to "give me some of that!")
Hi (always accompanied by wrist-turning wave)
Birdie (see "favorite activities" above)
Mama
Dada
Grandpa (pronounced "Bahpa")
All done (usually sounds like "hi")

(She tries to say N and L, but it usually comes out sounding like "Dada".)

And that's about all the facts on Little Miss C!  She is becoming quite her own personality and a wonderful part of our family.

  1. Ab, have you heard of La Leche League? They might have some strong info on the nutrition piece. I have never heard that breastfeeding loses its nutritional value at one year. More often, it's the social stigma that pushes moms to stop. You know what's right for C.

  2. ALSO, doctors tend to get concerned when babies get close to the 5th percentile. From my experience with her, C is rockin' and rollin' with cognitive, motor, and emotional development, which are typically lacking at the 5th percentile. I think your doc is just looking at numbers and missing the bigger picture.
