L's 2-Year Checkup
It happened over a month ago, back on June 16, but I'm recording it for posterity here on the blog.
Daddy worked from home that day, and he was the one to take L to the checkup, so I don't have too much to say about how the actual visit went. But here are her stats:
Weight: 27 pounds (55th percentile)
Height: 35.5 inches (89th percentile)
And here are the milestones she has met at 2 years of age, according to the checklist given by our pediatrician:
Social/Emotional:
*Copies others, especially adults and other children
*Gets excited when with other children
*Shows more and more independence
*Shows defiant behavior (oh yes!)
*Plays mainly beside other children, but is beginning to include other children, such as in chase games (L plays with her sisters all the time, but I'm not sure they count as "other children", since she is with them constantly)
Language/Communication:
*Points to things or pictures when they are named
*Knows names of familiar people and body parts
*Says sentences with 2 to 4 words
*Follows simple instructions
*Repeats words overheard in conversation
*Points to things in a book
Cognitive (Learning, thinking, problem-solving):
*Finds things even when hidden under two or three covers
*Begins to sort shapes and colors
*Completes sentences and rhymes in familiar books
*Plays simple make-believe games
*Builds towers of 4 or more blocks:
*Uses one hand more than the other
*Follows two-step instructions such as "Pick up your shoes and put them in the closet."
*Names items in a picture book such as cat, bird or dog.
Movement/Physical Development
*Stands on tiptoe
*Kicks a ball
*Begins to run (L runs everywhere!)
*Climbs onto and down from furniture without help (oh yes!)
*Walks up and down stairs holding on (or quite often not holding on, to frighten Mommy)
*Throws ball overhand
*Makes or copies straight lines and circles
Many of these things, especially the speech and large motor skills (these seem to be her two most advanced areas) she was doing back at the 18-month checkup. She converses easily with whoever will listen to her (if we're outside and a neighbor walks by, he or she gets a complete play-by-play of what we're doing from L). And she is nimble at everything she does: running, jumping, climbing... she even learned to pedal a tricycle recently, which N didn't master until she was almost 3.
{She is not as advanced at the fine motor skills-- or shall I say, not as interested. N was drawing and coloring and painting us masterpieces at the age of 18 months, while L has just started to sit long enough to draw a circle. Maybe I haven't allowed her as much practice, because she's usually more interested in coloring on the walls, the floor, or herself. Amazing how two sisters can be so different!}
They say she is entering the terrible twos, but I find her much easier to parent now than she was six months ago. As her language skills have developed, so have her reasoning skills. She understands consequences now, so she can usually be talked out of something if I explain things to her. And she seems to have an innate sense of right and "fair" (much like her father!) so she usually regrets an action that she knows has hurt somebody. She is so straightforward-- and although this means she has extreme highs and lows of emotion, it also means I never have to guess at what she is feeling.
And ohh, the things that come out of her mouth. They are hilarious!
Here are some brief "favorites" of L at 2:
Favorite Foods:
Mac n' Cheese, eggs, cheese, and fruit of all kinds are still at the top of the list
Tomato soup
Spaghetti
Pickles
Corn on the Cob
Broccoli
Croutons (she calls them "Croutoms")
Favorite TV Shows/Characters:
Sesame Street
Between the Lions (we get these episodes from the library)
Blues Clues
Thomas
Pee Wee's Playhouse (Are we bad parents for letting our children watch this? Time will tell. L calls him "Kiwi"!!)
Any of the Richard Scarry videos
Favorite Books:
Knuffle Bunny
Any of the Curious George books
Any of the Richard Scarry books
We recently discovered the "Sounds Like Reading" series by Brian P. Cleary, and L just loves them!
The "How Do Dinosaurs" books by Jane Yolen & Mark Teague
Favorite Songs/Games:
Ring around the Rosie
London Bridge
Anything Raffi!
A song called "Winter Lullaby" by Roger Tinknell
Wheels on the Bus
Baa Baa Black Sheep
... and many more! This girl loves to sing.
One other big step... today L said "I have to go potty" and went to sit on the potty by herself, without my help at all. This has never happened yet. She might tell me ahead of time, but usually I have to physically move her to the potty, or bribe her to sit down (only sometimes with candy... ummm...) We're getting there! Yay for L!
It's been an amazing two years, L! Keep up the good work!
