Bottle Cap Necklace
My daughter N is an "ideas" girl. A visionary. When she comes up with something to do, she is absolutely convinced it is the best plan.
Herstubborn strong will determined, perseverent spirit is growing every day.
This morning, she found a bottle cap from a beer that had been opened the previous night. On the bottle cap was a picture of a "pirate ship" (as she called it)... and N was fascinated by that tiny little picture as soon as she saw it. Apparently, the best way to honor the picture's beauty (in her mind) was to make it into a necklace.
She sat at the breakfast table, gazing at the bottle cap with a thoughtful look on her face. She was completely absorbed as she chewed her Cheerios, ideas churning in her head.
"Mama, I need you to help me make a bottle cap necklace."
Mama, preoccupied, could think only of getting us ready for church and out the door by 7 AM. I think I said something like, "Mmm hmm."
N would not settle for that. "Mama, please help me make a bottle cap necklace," she repeated, her tone exactly the same.
Mama: "Right now it's time to get ready for church. Are you going to sit with Dick and Jan today while Mommy and Daddy sing?" (Trying to distract her by mentioning her best "grandparent" friends at church.)
N: "Oh yes!!" (Two minutes later) "I'd like to make my bottle cap necklace now."
Mama: "That would be a great activity for today... AFTER we get home from church."
N turns to Daddy, who has just joined us at the breakfast table. "Daddy, will you help me make a bottle cap necklace? Right now, please?"
Daddy smiles, and says gently, "Mommy's right. We'll do it when we get home from church."
Fast forward to tonight. N has just had her bath. Daddy's in charge of baths, so I wasn't privy to the bathtub conversation... but I do know that as I washed the dishes, N and Daddy entered the kitchen with bottle cap and "tools" in hand.
Daddy to the rescue!
Daddy spent a few minutes figuring out the best way to punch a hole through the bottle cap. After the task was accomplished, N proudly threaded a piece of yarn through the hole, knotted it (with some help), and donned her prized necklace, after a long day of waiting.
"See Mama?" she said. "Doesn't it look beautiful?"
I looked. "Yes honey... it does!" It really did. It was a great idea.
Mama: "N, where did you get the idea to make a necklace out of a bottle cap? Did you see it on a TV show or in a book?"
"No Mama. I just thought of it, in my own head."
Daddy: "It really was a great idea."
N thought for a few minutes. "I can wear my necklace to church sometime... or, NO!! {grinning} I've got a great idea!! I can wear it to Sara's wedding!!!!"
(She's going to be the flower girl in my cousin's wedding this weekend.)
Oh dear, how will we convince our little visionary that a bottle cap necklace is perhaps not the best adornment for a flower girl? Mama and Daddy are going to have to come up with something pretty convincing.
What will she think of next?
