Learning the Alphabet

L got lots of wonderful presents at her birthday party (thank you everyone!)... she has played with all of them almost every day since our celebration.  Two of her gifts were alphabet-themed: a block cart from Grandma Haynes and a homemade "Busy Box" from her Auntie Bethie (M's sister).  This one was a collection of fun activities in a big box (flour, rice, bubble bath, raffia, little squishy balls, metallic shiny scouring pads, foam letters like these, and Thomas bath squirters) perfect for our busy little L!

As we've been playing with the alphabet blocks and the foam letters together these past few weeks, I've realized that L knows nearly all of her letters already.  She'll hold up a block or foam letter, say "That's a __" and about eighty percent of the time she's right!  (N is also doing quite well now writing her own letters without me having to show her what they look like.)  I haven't made any effort at all to teach letters to L.  I think she has just learned the alphabet because she's interested... and because we've been listening to Sing the Alphabet (borrowed from the library) and watching her two favorite Richard Scarry YouTube videos a lot lately:

I feel guilty letting the girls watch too much TV, but the "Richard Scarry's Best..." series of videos, along with a select few other shows, actually make me feel good putting them in front of the TV.  I always know that they will interact and learn something.  The "Best Learning Songs" video features one of our favorite characters, Hilda Hippo, singing an alphabet song (at 6:00) that the girls (and Mama) now have memorized.  I wanted to record their version, because I just love hearing them sing it!

And that's our alphabet song for you!
