Thoughtfulness
N is still working out her understanding of Grammie's death and funeral. It still pops up in conversations from time to time. We had a conversation the other day that made me realize that she might be beginning to grasp the sadness of death. I wanted to have a record of it, so here it is:
N: Hey Mama, do you know what is up in the sky?
Mama: Ummm... the sun?
N: No.
Mama: Birds?
N: No.
Mama: Clouds?
N: No... God is in the sky, Mama.
Mama: That's right.
N: And heaven, too.
Mama: Yes, you're right.
N: Is Great Grammie still in heaven, Mama?
Mama: Yes honey.
N: When will she be coming back?
Mama: Well, honey, when you die, you don't ever come back to earth. You stay in heaven forever. You stay with God forever.
N: But, how will she get back to Great Grampie?
Mama: She won't ever come back to him here on earth. But when we die and go to heaven, we'll see her again. And Great Grampie will too.
N: I hope that Great Grampie is not too lonely by himself.
I thought this was a pretty thoughtful thing for a 3-year-old to say.
