Conversations
We've had quite a few funny conversations around our house today.
This morning was the first morning that I did preschool drop-off on my own with all three girls. That means that I had everyone (plus myself) dressed, fed, with toilet needs taken care of by 8:25 AM so we could be out the door. I RULE!! Just kidding, I know there are plenty of mothers out there who do this every single day, but it was a new task for me, and one with a learning curve. Surprisingly, however, it didn't really feel that much harder than getting two girls (plus myself) ready in the morning. Maybe it's because the girls were really helpful and cooperative today.
But I digress.
I had laid out everyone's clean clothes in the living room the night before so that we could all dress quickly without having to travel too far. As I was cleaning up the breakfast dishes in the kitchen, I heard this conversation happening behind my back:
N: L, would you like to play with Mama's underwear?
L: (enthusiastically) Okay!
N: Okay, put it on your head.
Is it bad that I didn't even bother to intervene? It was clean underwear, right? And it kept them busy for a few minutes.
On the way over to preschool, L was playing with my old Samsung flip phone (circa 2006) that I have given to her to use as a toy. One of her phone conversations went like this:
"Hello?... Hi... {Chicken} Nuggets... Fries... Hat... Wear it. Bye."
It made me curious as to what the person on the other end would have been saying.
Later on we went to pick up N at preschool, and as we were getting ready to go there were too many things for me to carry. I had C in her carseat, plus there was a wet painting that N had made, N's fruit snack on a plate that she had to take home, and her backpack. I was in the middle of asking N if she could carry her backpack while balancing her fruit snack at the same time, when L walked up and said, "I carry it, Mama." She grabbed the backpack and strapped it on (with a little help). I figured she would lose interest after a few steps and I would end up carrying everything anyway, but no! She carried that backpack all the way to the car, despite the fact that it was as big as she is and probably about half her weight. When we reached the car, she cast off the backpack onto the ground with an "Ooof!" and climbed into her car seat. Halfway through the journey home, I heard her cry, "OH NO! I drop backpack onna ground!" I had to reassure her that Mommy had picked it up and put it in the car, and everything was okay. She was afraid we had left the backpack in the preschool parking lot!!
Later on, when we were all home and finishing up lunch, the girls were playing with their favorite new toy:
Grandma found this at the Salvation Army thrift store. The girls have spent many, many hours playing with it. When you think about it, the possibilities for play are endless with this thing. This afternoon, N was studying the different princesses, and she said to me:
N: I look like Jasmine today, because I'm wearing a blue headband.
Mama: You're right!
N: Why is Jasmine wearing a bra?
Mama: It's not really a bra, it's a shirt that's kind of short and shows her belly.
N: I wish I had a shirt like that.
Mama: Well, maybe you can have one when you get bigger.
N: I wish I was bigger now.
I guess she's not too little to worry her poor parents with her ideas about how to dress.
...and then we took her picture in her blue headband:
P.S. Part of the reason I took the pictures above was that N looked SO pretty yesterday in her blue headband and shirt-- the pictures don't even do justice to the color of her eyes. I was wondering at the time how such a beautiful, perfect little creature could be related to me. But I feel that way about all of my daughters, as I'm sure all mothers do. There are certainly going to be some broken hearts among the boys born in 2008, 2010 and 2012. Just sayin'.
