15 Months
L had her 15-month checkup last Wednesday. It was quick, simply because I had no questions, and because L is doing so well. I was able to answer all of the doctor's questions in the affirmative, which means that L is right on track for milestones. (In case you're curious, some of the questions were: Does she feed herself? Does she have at least 3-6 words? Can she bend over and pick things up? Is she climbing? Does she drink well from a sippy cup? Can she scribble? Can she identify at least one body part? Can she follow simple directions?) L was even able to demonstrate some of her skills during our visit.
Stats:
Height: 32 inches (90th percentile)
Weight: 23.6 lbs (55th percentile)
Head circumference: 19 inches (95th percentile)
I'll try to think of a few things to write that will outline her current personality and activities.
She is ever daring and fearless. I think she just wants to do everything the big kids do. At the playground lately, she delights in scaring Mommy by climbing up the tallest structure and trying to walk down the tallest slides. She gets to the top of these tall playground structures almost faster than I can follow her and catch her (especially at 6 months pregnant)!
She's quite mischievous. My mom put it best when she said that L always seems to be thinking "I wonder what would happen if..." As with most children her age, she is active, into everything, and curious, especially about the things that she can't have, like Mommy's phone, or the things that she can't do, like climb up on the kitchen table, put her feet in sister's potty chair, or shake the lamp stand in the living room. The minute I turn my back she is usually doing one of these things! Because of this active curiosity, though, she is a delight to play with, and it is so fun and rewarding to watch the wheels turning in her head as she learns new things while we play or sing together.
She is really beginning to exert her (strong) will, as any normal 15-18 month old would do. Combine that with the above listed activities and we're going through a pretty exhausting (for Mommy) phase. There are days when it's hard not to get frustrated, and because every child is different, the parenting tactics I remember from N's younger days require constant revision. She certainly keeps me on my toes! I think my saving grace is the fact that, for her age, she communicates with me and Daddy extraordinarily well. We're not usually in any doubt as to what she wants (or doesn't want)!!
We've had an explosion of new words and talking from her lately. When the doc asked how many words she has, I estimated around 20, but it may be closer to 40 or 50. Among the ones I can think of are alright, all-done, airplane, ball, boots, banana, blueberry, Blue (from Blue's Clues), Bear-Bear (her favorite teddy), bye-bye, cup, cake, cat, Crocs, cow, car, Dada, door, drink, duck, Elmo, feet, hand, hi, hello, help, juice, milk, Mama, moo, morning, more, N, nose, no, night-night, open, okay, outside, poop, play, quack-quack, row (singing "row row row your boat"), ride, seat, slide, swing, see, teeth, tower, truck, upstairs, water, walk, wheee, yeah. Okay, so that's over 50 right there, and I'm pretty sure there are more that I'm not thinking of. She's also imitating inflections and voices. She has some new Elmo slippers and she always uses a high-pitched voice when talking to or about them (imitating Elmo). She also imitates Mommy-- the other night while taking a bath she stood up, then scolded herself "Sit down! Bum!" with Mommy's exact inflection.
She loves singing and being sung to. The songs I've actually heard her attempting to sing herself are ABC's, Row Row Row your Boat, and Rock-a-Bye your Bear. If she's upset or crying, she can be quickly cheered up/distracted by hearing one of her favorite songs.
She is a very lovey child lately. She liberally gives hugs and kisses to Mama, Dada, N... anyone or any toy who is around to receive them. She is fun-loving and has a great little sense of humor. She has that "knowing" gleam in her eye, like she already gets all the jokes.
She has a blanky which she calls "Mi" (her attempt at saying "blanky"). The number of blankies she has allowed into the "Mi" category increased to 3 this week, since we left the original "Mi" at church and she was without it for an entire week. She adopted a couple of substitutes. This is great because it means I can cycle through washing them now, without her being deprived of Mi.
Her favorite food is... everything.
And really, could any little girl be more beautiful (besides her big sister, of course)?

We love you, little L! It is a joy to watch you growing up into such a big girl.
