March Madness

...because we're all mad here.

Quick pic updates here from our week, for your Wednesday!

Tap costumes!!!  So fringey and awesome!!

House hunting...

We currently have an accepted offer on a house in the school district of M's new job.  We're cautiously excited... it is the PERFECT house for us, but we're still in early stages.  Home inspection is tomorrow so we will know more firm details then, and perhaps I'll be able to share more.  Another Story of Our House, perhaps?  Stay tuned.

Popovers on a Saturday morning, along with travel videos on YouTube, dreaming of the day when we will be able to cure our cabin fever.

This is the first time I have had popovers actually puff up in a while!  I've been making them gluten- and dairy-free for a while, and they still taste good but they're not at all puffy.  More like spongy muffins.  But I've been experimenting with giving C a bit of gluten and dairy lately, and she seems to be doing fine.  It's nice that she's old enough now to articulate how things make her feel, and has learned her own body's negative reactions.  For example, when she has straight up milk or ice cream, she tells me she gets a "funny mouth feeling"... but in our last few experiments with anything baked that contains dairy/gluten, she says she doesn't get the feeling.  Baking breaks down those allergenic proteins a bit, so it makes sense that she's better able to tolerate it.  She even had a piece of my homemade pizza the other night (gluten AND dairy) and felt completely fine.  Saints be praised!  I won't say no to not having to cook an extra meal... and after years of restrictive eating for her, it does my heart good to "treat" her with a little more freedom.

J continues to make leaps and bounds of progress with reading and writing.  Above you see a picture she drew (I still am the grateful recipient of at least 2 pictures every day) on my dinner instructions that I left before I went downstairs for a long remote teaching block.  She sounded out an old family saying "roll it up and *crunch*" that we say about sandwiches/wraps.  Inside joke there.  She's writing lots of these types of things down, and I love to see her attempts at sounding out words:

Taped to her door: "Please don't enter this room" Emphasis on rooooom :)

Today as I was braiding her hair before bringing her into tap class, she was sounding out a "No Trespassing" sign on the building.  It went like this:  "No... trees.. passing... hm... No... triss... passing... No... trashpassing!  That's it!  So it's like, 'Hey, here's some trash!' {pass}... you're not allowed to do that."  Love where her brain went with that one, hahaha!!

Beautiful sunrise on my morning run yesterday!  The weather has been soooo beautiful.  Just the emotional lift we all needed after a long and sad winter.

Now that we have finished the Hornblower series, M and I have been watching the Poldark series together!  He finally agreed to humor me!!!  It has been so fun.  I think he {mostly} likes it, and it has been really fun for me to re-visit the show after having finished reading most of the books now.  I understand the characters on a new level and so I'm all the more emotionally attached.  The girls joke that they hear the Masterpiece trumpet coming from our bedroom every night after we've put them to bed.  Creatures of habit are we!

A fave meal from this week... shrimp scampi, to use up some leftover cocktail shrimp I had in the freezer, and some regular gluten spaghetti that my Instacart shopper put in my order by accident (I promise I ordered gluten free).  I figured because C couldn't eat the shellfish anyway we could use up the gluten pasta with this dish too.  (I made her a pot of gluten free vegan mac on the side!)  I never realized that shrimp scampi is soooo easy to make-- basically the sauce is just butter, garlic, white wine and lemon juice.  One of my favorite meals of all time that I haven't had in years.  A nice treat!  And isn't fresh springtime asparagus just the most delicious??

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day a little early this morning, with my girl in her green pjs and green bow, with the green eggs she found at the grocery store!

They were yummy!

That's it for this week!  Happy spring to you all!
