Weekend Update and Short Meal Plan

We had a lovely 4th of July weekend; how about you?

We had no plans going into the weekend.  I sort of hoped to get some home organizing done-- we are going to be away for the next three weekends of July, and I figure by August I will be huge and unmotivated to do much.  So I had written a fairly long list of things to do.

But M will be leaving for a week-long work conference in Dallas this Wednesday so we wanted to get some good family time in too, before being apart for so long.

I think we struck a pretty good balance as the weekend went on between family time and productivity.

Here's some of the photos:

As M was running by our friends' house Friday afternoon they gave him an impromptu invitation to a gathering they were having that night.  I welcomed the break from work (did I tell you I agreed to teach a summer class online? Long story... tell ya later) and we headed over for pool time, hot dogs, home-smoked ribs, and good company.

I brought the strawberry shortcake I had made that day for dessert, and may or may not have had a second helping after the girls went to bed.  Major craving satisfied there.

The morning of the 4th dawned and we hadn't planned anything for the day.  We googled some parades because C was very interested and found one that didn't disappoint.  Daddy offered to bring the girls so I could stay home and finish up the last of my work online and sneak in a quick treadmill run.  So I had to miss it but it felt good to have the rest of the day with no pressure to do any work.

They got lots of candy thrown in their direction which was C's main objective I think!

L's wish for several weeks has been to hike up the mountain on the 4th of July.  Rain was predicted for the afternoon but she still wanted to try it.  And when this girl sets her mind to something there is no stopping her.  The other girls were meh on the idea, but Daddy was game so they went just the two of them, thinking they would just hike to the first landmark on the trail (about .5 miles) and then turn back for home.  They did that and of course L wanted to press on to the top of the mountain.  So on they went.  In the rain.  With L cheerful the whole time.

They saw not just one but three of L's favorite: red salamanders.

(froggy hiding by the leaf)

Hearing M describe the experience of hiking 3.2 miles in the rain with this girl reminded me of her determined and courageous spirit when we were in the ER last fall.  She is truly a remarkable little one.

Then it was over to our other neighbors' house for more grilling and sparklers.

On Sunday we pretty much relaxed.  Church in the morning, grocery shopping, and I tried to start a few projects in the afternoon while girls rested but I didn't really have much energy.  So I helped the girls set up a lemonade stand instead

...and a neighbor friend came over to help them sell.  They made $3!  I think that's more than I ever made on a lemonade stand as a kid. :)

After dinner I was so exhausted (not sure quite why... it was a busy day, but... I've had busier) that I laid down and promptly fell asleep at 6:30 PM!  M handled supper cleanup, a shower for C, and bedtime by himself.  I woke up to find the girls in bed and M finishing the last of the dishes.  I apologized for being a lazy bum!  He kindly said it was no problem and we watched a bit of First Peoples on PBS before falling asleep again at 9.  Woo hoo!

Monday morning I woke up and was so full of energy that I accomplished *everything* that I had on my to-do list for the weekend, while the girls just played the day away in their room.

Closet organization, mostly:

These bursts of energy can be so unpredictable in pregnancy, but I take them when I get them.  It would be great if they happened more on the weekend, but as long as my girls will play happily together during the week (thanks for that, girls) I can still be productive!

We are already halfway through our very short meal plan for this week.  Wednesday we're off to CT while M is away.
