They all went over the mountain
Sometimes, when you live in a picturesque place like New England, you start to get accustomed to the beauty of your surroundings and sort of forget the wonderful things that are right in your backyard.
L reminded me that we live minutes away from the foothills of a mountain by asking this afternoon, "Mama, can we drive up the mountain with a pizza?"
(We did this on a whim one night, about a week after we moved into our new place, as we were exploring our surroundings. L got a big kick out of it and has asked to do it several times since then. We are never able to refuse her!)
By the time I got everybody ready, M got home from work, and we swung by the pizza place to pick up our order, it was past our usual supper time. I asked L if she wanted a little cheesy bread to snack on, and she said, "No Mama. When we get to the top of the mountain, then I'll have some pizza. Okay?"
It was as if she remembered the moment and was looking forward to it as much as we were.
It is so quiet at the summit. And gloriously close to the heavens. It's the kind of pause that a person should be taking more than once every six months.
L sat on the bench and munched on her pizza next to Daddy, saying things like "Ohhhh, I love this breeze," and "You can see for miles!!" and "Goldfish are very unusual creatures." (There's a little goldfish pond in the picnic area.)
We observed a park ranger coming through in his pickup truck to empty the trash cans at the summit. L was fascinated by him and referred to him as "The Park Stranger" for the rest of the night.
Mommy scarfed my pizza while I chased after C, who laughed and babbled and filled herself up as only an 18-month old can with the pure joy of running through the wind.
And then we climbed the tower.
And finally, some pictures of our last trip up the mountain, which are dated September 2012, and I'm pretty sure I never posted them here. Everyone has changed a bit since then!!

C looks funny in every one of these pictures, as if to say "Stop holding me! Put me down and let me run!!"

L made this face purposefully and said, "Take my picture Mama." Thank you, Miss Ham.

C was so busy running around that she neglected her pizza until we got in the car afterwards. And then she chowed down with a vengeance.
All the way home, L had deep questions like, "Why does it get dark?" and "Why does the earth spin?" and "How did the mountain get here?" And plenty of hilarious things to say too.
(You'll notice that N is absent from the pictures of today's trip to the mountain... she's having her week at Grandma's this week, as L did last week. It's only been a few hours, and already we've had some wonderful individual time with L. It's so nice to be able to focus some attention on her... not that we don't all miss N, of course!!)
