Still Here

Apologies for the lack of posts here.  I'm around, but we've been quite busy in the past week, and M and I are preparing to leave on tour with his high school choir kids on Friday.  Yes, that means we're leaving the girls with Grandma & Grandpa... and it will be the first time that L has been away from Mama & Dada for more than a few hours.  So, there's a lot to do to prepare everybody and everything.  But... since last night none of us slept very well, and I'm quite tired, I'm allowing myself a little blogging break.  Don't expect much organization or coherence in this post.  Commencing mind vomit... :-)

So last week my Mom visited, and it was the most wonderful break for me.  She helped with everything... the girls, the housework, the nap-time chats.  I guess that's why I wasn't blogging... I was spending my time talking to her instead of talking to my blog.  Quite nice.  I can only aspire to be as motivated and productive as this lady is.  Thanks Momma!!  The girls and I also had a really nice visit with my friend Missy.  It's always nice to chat with her and the girls love to get out of the house and see friends.

If you happen to hear of any deals on cars out there, be sure to let us know.  Our 16-year-old, 200k mile car will require more repairs than it is worth to pass inspection.  So, M and I have been sharing one car for the past two weeks.  You'd think this would be a pain, but I've actually enjoyed it so far.  It forces me to really plan my time ahead so that I accomplish home tasks when we're stuck at home, and plan errands for the days when we'll have the car.  We also get to spend more time with M because we're all together for his commutes.  But sooner or later, we're going to have to figure out a solution to this problem.  We've been so busy lately that we just haven't had time for any car shopping.

L has learned to play patty cake.  It happened last Thursday while we were out to dinner with my Mom. She was sitting in her high chair, and she just started clapping her hands.  Then she opened her mouth really big and got SO excited, like she was thinking "I can't believe I'm doing this!!"  So now she and N have great fun playing patty cake together.  She's also imitating lots of words.  For example, for lunch today she was enjoying one of her favorites: sliced banana.  I made up a little song and I was saying the word slowly... "L, do you want some more BA-NA-NA, BA-NA-NA, BA-NA-NA?" and she replied "Ba ba ba," matching my inflection perfectly.  So cute!

N also noticed today that ABC's and Twinkle have the same tune.  We sang them one after the other, and she said, "It sounds the same!"  As a musical Mama I have to be proud of that one.

In preparation for the upcoming trip, after 10 months of nursing L has been completely weaned as of last week.  We're now doing formula and I'll probably start slowly introducing cow's milk when she's 11 months (that's how I did it with N).  There's a part of me that is sad, and of course I feel a slight amount of guilt for not making it to that magical 12-month mark.  But she and I were both really ready to be done with it.  She's way too busy to stare at my chest for any length of time, and I was getting rather nervous about her biting.  I guess I have a little less patience with all of that the second time around.  Sometimes she will sit and snuggle with me for her bottles, but she's mostly happy to carry them around the house so her crawling exploration is not interrupted.  It works out pretty well for everybody.  She eats so much table food now, too, that we don't have to pack her too full of formula.

She LOVES pulling up and standing and continues to try to stand without holding on.  Her balance has improved a lot.  We'll see what happens in the next few weeks...

N has consistently made it through naps with no diaper on-- for about a week now.  She usually wakes up dry in the morning too, and she would rather do her morning pee on the potty than in her diaper.  The other morning we were driving M to work and she asked if we could stop the car so she could go potty, even though she had a diaper on.  What a big girl!!

We moved the girls into the same room together a few weeks back.  M and I are now in N's old, smaller room and the girls have the bigger master bedroom.  I had intended to post before and after pictures, because we really did make a nice space for them in the new room, but I did not take any.  I will report, however, that good sleep has been hit or miss since the move.  We knew this would be the case, so I'm not complaining.  But today I've been wondering whether some of N's wake-ups are due to feeling the urge to go potty.  So we'll have to come up with a solution for that.  Whenever I've put the potty close to her room for nap times, she just uses it as an excuse to get out of bed and sit on the potty 500 times.  Well... just one more problem to solve.  It will all work out eventually!!

So, M and I are off to Williamsburg in a few days... I'm really looking forward to it.  We'll see some sights, spend some time together, chaperone some kids, and most importantly (for me) we'll enjoy four nights in a row of uninterrupted sleep!!!!  (Unless one of the high schoolers pulls the fire alarm or something... pleeaaase no!!)  I'm going to feel like a new woman.

So there you go.  My stream-of-consciousness update.  Sorry I have no pictures or videos of anything.  When life slows down I'll try to remedy that.
