Belly Colds and Pink Snowsuits

This morning I woke up sounding like I had been smoking for 50 years, due to a semi-cold that has settled into my throat.  (No stuffy nose or other major cold symptoms yet, knock on wood.)

Here's how the conversation went as N first heard me speak:

N: What happened (to your voice)?

Mama: I think I'm getting a cold.

N: I think I'm getting a cold too.

Mama:  Really?  My throat is scratchy.  Is your throat scratchy?

N: No, my belly is scratchy.

I think she said this because we "scratch" (tickle) her belly and she couldn't quite transfer the meaning of the word "scratchy" to something that would happen to one's throat.  Pretty funny.

My mother and I recently picked out N's Christmas present from her grandparents: a new snowsuit, hat and boots.  Grandma wanted me to help her order them while we were at the house for Thanksgiving, so that they would arrive before Christmas and N could use them to play in any snow we get during the month of December.  So today, as I was putting N down for her nap, we heard a loud knock at the door. I ran downstairs from N's bedroom to get the door while N watched me from the top of the stairs.  When I opened the door, nobody was there.  There was only a big brown box on the doorstep.

Mama: N, look what came!!

N:  Santa came!!

Mama: (playing along) That's right, Santa came and brought you a present.

N: Let's open it!

(So we opened the box and, of course, it was the new snowsuit.  N immediately wanted to try on the boots.  She wasn't so sure about the snowsuit, which Grandma and I had decided should be a beautiful turquoise blue, despite the fact that N had specifically requested a pink snowsuit.)

Mama: Let's try on the snowsuit!

N: Nooo... maybe a pink one.

Mama:  But look, Santa brought you this pretty blue snowsuit.  Let's try it on!

N: Oh!  Yeah!

(as Mama is putting the jacket on)

N: But... I'm going to look like a boy!! (I promise these were her exact words.)

I have no idea where she got the idea that girls wear pink and boys wear blue.  What is she, a teenager?

After a few minutes of trying everything on, however, she was completely excited and asked when it was going to snow so she could play outside in her new snowsuit.  All thoughts of a color preference seemed gone.

This girl comes up with something new every day.
